Evangelism Task Force Jesus announced that he had come “not to be served but to serve” (Matthew 20:28) and that he has set us an example, “that you also should do as I have done” (John 13:15). A disciple of Jesus is, first of all, a servant who sees God most clearly in the needs of others and reaches out to meet those needs. Service is the heartbeat of discipleship. “As the Father has sent me, so I send you,” says Jesus to the church today (John 20:21). Discipleship is being sent forth with the gifts God gives for that purpose.
Disciples are sent forth into their homes, schools, workplaces, and communities at large. The possibilities of service are beyond counting in the ministry area of every congregation. What has this to do with evangelism? Doing acts of mercy is one of the ways we tell the Christian story. Being in ministry is an evangelical act; it testifies to the grace and love of God in action. |
